Participation in the SEEMLA project “Sustainable exploitation of biomass for bioenergy from marginal lands”

Τhe 3rd meeting of the working group and the national workshop of the European project SEEMLA was carried out succesfully on 08 & 09/11/2016 in Rome.  The meeting was attended by our company’s representative, Mr Nikolaos Gounaris as a partner of the Democritus University of Thrace.

The SEEMLA project is funded by the European Programme “HORIZON 2020” and has as main objectives:

  • the determination and assessment of marginal lands availability for bioenergy production in Europe
  • the development and implementation of a set of specific indicators for assessing marginal lands availability

The project aims to assess and evaluate the available energy potential of plant biomass in marginal lands, avoiding conflict with the food processing sector while maintaining overall ecosystem services. The project involves partners from 4 countries:

  1. Germany : Agency for Renewable Resources (FNR), Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IFEU) and Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus ‑Senftenberg
  2. Greece : Department of Forestry and Management of the Environment and Natural Resources, Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) and Decentralised Administrator of Macedonia & Thrace
  3. Italy : Environmental NGO Legambiente
  4. Ukraine : Institute of Bioenergy Crops and Sugar Beet (IBC&SB) and Salix Energy Ltd

The topic of the workshop was: “Exploring marginal lands for biomass and bioenergy production: the Italian scenario”.  The keynote speakers of the workshop were:

  • Antonio Brunori, Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)
  • Lorenzo Ciccarese, Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA)
  • Olivier Dubois, Leader Energy Programme «Climate and Environment Division» – Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
  • Massimo Fagnano, University of Napoli
  • Marco Colangeli, Programme Adviser- FORBIO project – Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
